What is the Max Gould Competition?
The Max Gould Memorial Adult Invitational Competition
(formerly known as the Max Gould Memorial Adult Dance Competition) is a
fun competition held at Varsity Arena every year in March in honour of
Max Gould. The first competition was held in 1988. As the name implies,
this competition is for adults only and is open to members of other
skating clubs. There are competitive events in Dance, Free Skate, Pairs
and
Interpretive for various levels.
Who was Max Gould?
Lewis "Max" Gould was born in 1911 and died in 1988. He
discovered figure skating in the 1940s through a Sonja Henie movie and
quickly became interested in this new activity. He joined the
University Skating Club around 1946 and was made an Honourary Life
Member in 1984. He was President for the 1966-67 season. His
contributions to the sport of figure skating are too numerous to
mention here.
